President's Message

See you in the Fall.

President, Maryland Chapter of HIMSS

Advocacy Committee

Want to learn more about how our state government works? Interested in having your voice heard when it comes to Health IT policy issues? The MD HIMSS Advocacy Committee could use some new volunteers to help us make a difference! The Advocacy Committee works to educate our state and federal legislators, provide opportunities for our membership to connect with legislators, and provide guidance in support of HIT related technology that improves outcomes for our population. The committee plans events to engage with members of the Maryland House of Delegates Health and Government Operations (HGO) Committee and with advocacy liaisons among our membership to educate them about issues that HIMSS members care about (and to educate our members). Team members will participate in planning throughout the year but may also be asked to take a focused, lead role on an event(s). If you’re interested in being a volunteer, fill out our handy-dandy Committee Membership Form and choose “Advocacy” from the committee selection question. Have questions? Please contact Dr. Ross Martin, Chair of the Advocacy Committee, at ross.martin@crisphealth.org.

Communications Committee

The Maryland Chapter of HIMSS is an all-volunteer organization and its strength is derived from the commitment and passion of its volunteers.  Serving on a committee can and should benefit both the organization and the individual volunteer.  It is an opportunity for the individual to provide their skills and expertise to the Chapter to achieve specific goals while also allowing the volunteer to gain additional experience with existing skills as well as developing new skills.  And best of all, it can be fun!

We are always looking for volunteers that have expertise or interest in the areas of web site authoring, graphic design, Constant Contact, newsletter editing, photography, videography, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.  We always would like to do more for our members but much depends on contributions of our volunteers.

Something on your mind?  Please drop us a line md.info@himsschapter.org .

Community Outreach Committee

The Community Outreach Committee has been busy soliciting and securing Corporate Sponsorships so that we can help to defray the costs of all the activities that we have planned for this year.  We owe a great deal of appreciation for those organizations that have stepped up to help support us.  Our Corporate sponsors, and the money that they donate represent close to half of our budget dollars for the year.  They are the main reason why our Board is able to provide our membership with a wide assortment of Educational, Networking, and Social events that you can enjoy for free or at a very affordable cost.  So when you see one our Corporate Sponsors, try to direct your business toward them.

As an additional goal, we hope to separately raise money throughout the year so that we can make a significant donation to a charitable organization or cause.  Look for more information on this topic as it develops further.  In the meantime, if you see a donation box at one of our events, please pitch in a couple dollars to go towards this cause.

Thank you,

The Community Outreach Committee

Community Outreach Chair.

Showcasing our Upcoming Year of Events

By Kathryn A. Whitmore, Maryland HIMSS Board Vice President and Programs Chair

It’s that time of year again! As summer ends, we are excited to have kicked off another year of Maryland HIMSS educational programs and social events. We had a blast at our first social event, Dockside Drinks at Nick’s Fish House on August 31st, and hopefully you were able to attend. If not, please register for our Annual Networking Dinner Event upcoming at Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville on Wednesday evening, September 27th beginning with cocktails and Hours d’oeuvres at 5pm. Please check out our entire Events Calendar for the upcoming year at http://md.himsschapter.org/Events/index.aspx and update your calendar. Some exciting highlights include an Octoberfest social hour, learning from the Frederick Regional Health System’s Journey to HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 in November, and more Maryland case study presentations in 2018 at Sheppard Pratt in Towson and the beautiful Doordan Institute at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Back by popular demand, our Call for 2018 Speaking Proposals to solicit Maryland healthcare provider case studies is now open with a proposal submission deadline of Friday, October 6th! This year we are seeking HealthIT enabled Maryland health care transformation success stories from healthcare providers, payers, health information exchanges, government agencies, and academic institutions. To ensure we can offer continuing education credit for attending these presentations, we have adopted guidelines for case study presentations much like national HIMSS uses for the annual conference.

The required submission template including speaking proposal format and guidelines can be found on our website. Proposals must be submitted by emailing a completed template to MD.Programs@himsschapter.org no later than 5pm EST on Friday, October 6th. We will review submissions via a HIMSS led peer review process and notify those selected for presentation by the end of November 2017. We expect to select one or more Maryland provider case study presentations to augment the February and April 2018 educational programs.
